Fountain Valley Schools Foundation Highlights Augmented Reality Innovation and Hands-On STEM at October Meeting

Bringing Science to Life with Merge EDU

Through generous funding from the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation, Newland Elementary recently implemented Merge EDU technology into its STEM curriculum. Utilizing specialized Merge Cubes and digital tablets, students can hold three-dimensional objects and conduct scientific simulations right in their hands.

"Imagine holding the solar system in your hands, examining a dinosaur from every angle, or exploring the inner workings of the human body," shared Mr. Ploski and Mrs. Marzcinko. "Concepts that were once limited to textbook illustrations can now become interactive learning experiences." With access to over 100 interactive science simulations, young learners deep-dive into complex concepts through hands-on discovery.

Connecting Classroom Learning to STARBASE Academy

Reinforcing the district's recent feature, "FVSD 5th Graders Explore Hands-On STEM at Los Alamitos STARBASE Academy," Principal Ploski also highlighted the incredible impact of Newland 5th graders' recent week-long day trip series to the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos. During the trip, students engaged in computer-aided design (CAD), practical physics experiments, and engineering challenges led by military and civilian STEM educators.

Celebrating Student Achievement

The meeting also featured a data presentation by Dr. Spiratos on CAASPP 2026 student achievement scores, showcasing strong academic performance across district schools. Foundation members—many of whom are long-time community advocates and former FVSD parents—expressed great pride in student success and gratitude for the dedicated educators driving these results.

Dr. Spiratos commended the Foundation for its steadfast investment in innovative tools and memorable learning opportunities that inspire curiosity across all 10 FVSD campuses.
